2nd Man from Bell Block Shootout remains in Custody

A man charged with burgling the Bell Block based New Plymouth Golf Club during which his alleged accomplice was shot dead by police has been further remanded in custody. Kevin Ronald Bishell, a career criminal stood in the dock in the New Plymouth District Court yesterday, Wednesday 26th June 2013 with his hands behind his back for the short appearance. The prosecution alleges that on June 8th 2013, together with Adam Te Rata Charles Morehu, he committed an aggravated burglary with a .22 rifle and used a gun against an enforcement officer. Morehu was shot dead about 4am after he fired at police who had arrived at the golf club to investigate silent alarms. Yesterday in court, Bishell’s lawyer, Paul Keegan, said his client would remain in custody by consent for a committal date. Judge Max Courtney agreed to interim suppression orders in respect to other information before the court, saying the suppression orders might not continue following further hearings. Bishell was remanded in custody until August 5th 2013.
