A few more shops, a bigger cafe and a conference room might save Bell Block based New Plymouth airport users from a departure tax to fund the terminal’s expansion. The New Plymouth District Council has committed to extending the 49-year-old terminal and is currently seeking a lead consultant for the multimillion-dollar project. Built to cope with 60,000 passengers a year, more than 300,000 now pass through the facility annually. Owned 50/50 by the council and the crown, councillors last year decided to forge ahead with a statement of intent to extend the terminal. Construction is planned for 2014-15.
