At around 2.30pm today, Sunday 14th July 2013. massive Winds of up to 50 knots forced the closure of Bell Block’s New Plymouth airport. The airport tower duty controller said the “super strong cross winds” were making it impossible for planes to land or take off. “It’s not a good place to be right now.” He said he did not know when the airport would reopen. “There’s nothing coming in or out apart from leaves and bits of grass. A flight from Paraparaumu and two from Wellington which were due to land in New Plymouth have been cancelled, along with one flight leaving New Plymouth for Auckland and two heading to Wellington.
