Bell Block Beach to be Poo free soon

All New Plymouth’s sewage is now being fully treated despite the city’s wastewater treatment plant operating at half its capacity. The New Plymouth District Council has a resource consent to pump as much as half of the district’s wastewater out to sea with only partial treatment. The consent was necessary to allow work to upgrade the two aeration basins at the plant, but the prospect of partially-treated sewage being pumped out to sea caused outrage among Bell Block beach users last summer. However, council water and waste boss Mark Hall said the plant was now treating all sewage with a single upgraded aeration basin. “Provided we don’t get any big rainfalls we will continue to be able to do that,” he said.
