Bell Block’s Puketapu Kindergarten has won a major 2013 Taranaki Regional Council Environmental Award by developing a Environmental Education Awareness programme over a number of years, with a particular focus on waste minimisation and recycling. Waste minimisation is part of the everyday programme for the 60 children attending the kindergarten. There are five compost bins and six worm farms, the products of which are used in flower and vegetable gardens. Other initiatives include leaf collections, pest management activities and can collections. The children are also encouraged to consider how healthy their lunches are, and to cut down on packaging.
