Bell Block Lions set for annual spud ‘n’ bag contest

The Bell Block and Districts Lions Club is holding its annual potato-growing contest for Children and Adults. People can begin growing their Spud In A Bag after picking up the supplies required from competition sponsor Farmlands on Devon Road, Bell Block. Between October 7th and 12th 2013 , competitors can buy a sprouted seed potato and a bag for $10. People can then plant the potato in their favourite potting mix. “The idea is to bring the children into it and put emphasis on to the green grow-your-own-vegetable nursery for the children,” club spokesman Allan Ryan said. The grand weigh-in will be held at Farmlands on February 15th 2014, from 10am till 11.30am. Prizes include $50 for the winner, $25 for the runner-up, and $25 for the heaviest potato. The school with the most entries receives $100 and all potatoes are returned to their grower. “We’re right into community support,” Farmlands horticulture adviser John Gordon said. “We really do a lot of community things. We support all the rural schools with sponsorship for all sorts of things.” All proceeds from the competition go to youth activities in the Bell Block,Lepperton and Glen Avon area’s.
