A recent correspondent’s letter drumming up support to improve the intersection at Bell Block’s airport access road was right on the button. With planned airport expansion to cater for a projected major increase in passenger numbers and the announcement of another new, large hotel complex, Bell Block’s airport traffic is obviously going to increase dramatically before too long. The intersection is already scary enough, even for those of us who are familiar with it. It is certainly not a place for increased numbers of travel- weary drivers, in many cases unfamiliar with our road rules and their vehicles. It should be made a condition of the airport expansion that either a fly-over or roundabout is installed. The accident statistics at the Waitomo Cave intersection and retrospective work now required are warning enough.
