Local Radio Station Wins Major NZ Award

This radio station can be heard though out Bell Block and has the best Saturday Morning sports program (in English). Taranaki is now home to the best iwi radio station in New Zealand, the team involved in its success are already looking to the future.Te Korimako o Taranaki took top honours at this year’s 2014 Iwi Radio Awards when they were named 2014 Station of the Year at the awards in Rotorua. Te Korimako’s Tamzyn Pue also took out Best Breakfast Show host with colleague Matapaepae Urwin winning Best Regional News Reporter. Station manager Tipene O’Brien said he and his staff were delighted with their win. ‘‘It was a proud and humbling moment for the station to receive the award,’’ he said. Work would now begin on developing a plan for the future of the station along with setting a series of new goals. O’Brien said one of the key factors in their success had been the commitment of those involved to the station’s kaupapa, including the focus on te reo Maori. O’Brien said the win also provided a chance for the station to reflect on what they had achieved since it began in 1992. ‘‘We certainly savoured the moment,’’ he said. Te Reo Irirangi o Taranaki chair Hurimoana Haami said support from other organisations had contributed to the station’s award. ‘‘This ought to be shared across Taranaki, it goes far beyond the station,’’ Haami said. She also acknowledged the contribution made by kaumatua Huirangi Waikerepuru regarding his support of the station and the revival of te reo in the region. Former Te Reo o Taranaki board member Howie Tamati said the award-winning station was known for its quality programming and he was proud of their achievement. ‘‘It’s a fantastic award,’’ Tamati said. He said the consistently good work done by the station was also reflected in the number of accolades the team had been awarded. ‘‘To win so many categories as they have done is a credit to the organisation,’’ Tamati said.
