The same council (New Plymouth District Council) that is trying to save the pohutukawa in Waitara has recently cut down several mature pohutukawa in Hickford Park, Bell Block. These trees provided welcome shade in summer and helped to screen off the playing fields from the adjacent road. Instead of constantly nibbling away at what little greenery we have in Bell Block, it would be really nice to see some planting of street trees to reduce the dominating appearance of triffid- like lamp posts, particularly in the newer residential areas which must contribute substantial funds in rates to NPDC.
