A bigger than normal Voter turnout on Saturday 20th September 2014 at all 3 voting stations in Bell Block ensured the residents of Bell Block were easily able to vote their person back into Parliament as an MP. Johnathan Young was the massive winner on the night with just under a 10,000 majority. As expected the youth failed to get engaged in the voting process as all the times we visited the 3 polling stations all we could see was people aged 25 years and up. This ended up being the case all over Taranaki and King Country.
New Plymouth’s Jonathan Young more than doubled his 2011 majority over Labour’s Andrew Little, winning by 9176 votes. The result is in line with what has happened around the country on Saturday 20th September 2014, with National winning enough votes to govern alone. Sadly it’s not all over for Little, who may have scraped into parliament by the skin of his teeth as a list MP, however he will have to wait days until all special votes are counted to confirm his place.
Little’s 31 per cent was still only a shade more than half of Young’s final 58 per cent.
If you are working today, Saturday 20th September 2014, it’s important your employer gives you two hours paid leave to vote in the election.

When we visited the Fred Tucker Memorial Centre at 130 Parklands Avenue to vote at 10.15am we faced driving rain and strong winds and a little sunshine.

Like a scene in one of the Carry On Classic Films, Recently in Bell Block Andrew Little rolled in for an hour or so with his merry helpers in the Big Red Bus to drum up some much needed support for his campaign. In a pleasing touch it was interesting to note that many supporters had signed the bus with their names or messages of support. Too Little -Too Late,, was what I saw a member of the public write on the bus. We photographed the bus outside Bubbles Children Day Care, waiting for Andrew Little and his merry helpers to hop back on the bus to head out to Waitara.

Recently in Bell Block Andrew Little popped in for an hour or so with his merry helpers to drum up some much needed support for his campaign that has never got up and running. Mr Little became an MP for New Plymouth, not by the public voting for him, but for sneaking in as a List MP. This remains his only chance again the time around of staying on as a MP. It appears the public has picked up on his party’s message and will vote Positive. We are positive New Plymouth and Bell Block will stay true Blue for another 3 years. Now that is positive!!!!
If you are a female, then look at this picture every time you handle a $10 note and think,” Kate gave me the right to vote, did I use it or did I just let others decide my future and didn’t bother voting at all. ” Women in New Zealand were the first Worldwide allowed to vote.
It has been a while since Bell Block has been home to a New Plymouth District Councillor. Reports are coming in that in one of Bell Block’s newest streets we are set to welcome into the Bell Block Community a 3 term New Plymouth District Councillor. Shaun Biesiek and family are just a few months away from moving into their newly built home. Now it’s only 2 years away until the next elections. Are we to have the next Mayor living amongst us?
Some 30 members of the Bell Block Public, six New Plymouth District Councilors and our Mayor Andrew Judd battled away on a number of current subjects facing resident’s living in Bell Block, to the hotly contested issue’s of Maori Wards and the Fluoride Debate. Held at the Fred Tucker Hall on Parklands Avenue,Bell Block on Monday Evening the 15th September 2014. In fairness to the Mayor, he tried hard to be sincere, but failed to push his case on what benefit the Maori Ward system would bring to the table. Just when we thought everyone was against the idea, even all the Maori Residents in attendance thought it was total madness, up pop’s long term respected Councilor Craig McFarlene who also put his case forward on why Maori Ward’s are a good idea.
Murray (No Tie) Choung then jumped up most upset as Councilors were not meant to be speaking. Another interesting moment was when Councilor John McCloud addressed our Mayor as your Worship….One thing is for certain, the Dress Code for our Councilors is a total shambles, apart from Mayor Andrew Judd, and Councilors Craig McFarlene & Grant Coward.
“Shaping Our Future Together is about us working collaboratively as a community and really thinking about our future,” says the Mayor. “What do we value most in our district? What should we strive for over the next 10, 20 or 50 years? What should we do more of? And what should we stop doing? .
