Bell Block Anglican’s see Christmas arrive at Taranaki Cathedral

A 95% full Taranaki Cathedral, which is New Zealand’s Oldest Stone Church, saw many Bell Block people come along to Christmas Eve’s Midnight Mass to re-enforce the true meaning of Christmas. Held in what could only be called very warm and unusually humid weather conditions. We thought about the loss of Christ from Christmas and we experienced sadness at “happy holiday” cards replacing Christmas cards, and songs about Santa and reindeer replacing songs and carols about the birth of Jesus, angels and shepherds.”We too often get caught in the paraphernalia of peripheral things – of food, drink and presents – and forget that the heart of the matter is the birth of Jesus.” “In all the Christmas rush, we tend to forget the one present that is the original reason for all the present giving – the present of Jesus, called the Christ.”

Bell Block Library miss’s the Axe

Last night, Tuesday 16th December 2014, the New Plymouth District Council voted line-by-line on a list of 23 services that had to be axed to cap rate rises at 3 per cent for the next decade. Murray Chong who was suffering from wearing his neck-tie too tight also argued in favour of closing the Bell Block Library. In one comment he showed a total brain fade as he said Bell Block now had a Warehouse where people could buy books, or they could travel to New Plymouth and use the town library. Many things, like community funding, were deemed to be luxuries. “We can’t afford to give away money,” councillor Grant Coward said. “We are not a charity.” Next minute the New Plymouth District Councilors turned around and voted 8-5 in favor of the Lyn Lye Centre being kept as admission free. For the record the Multi- Purpose and very busy Bell Block Library will remain open in North Taranaki’s fastest growing Community.

Christmas at the Bowl needs to change

Thousands of people from throughout Taranaki and Bell Block witnessed more of an advert of what is coming to New Plymouth in 2015 than anything to do with Christmas and the festive season. In perfect weather conditions an event which had it roots as a family Christmas show has now sunk to having nothing about what the message is at Christmas, and apart from the normal Christmas Carols and a severally under weight fake Santa the real main event was an impressive fireworks display, which seemed it would never come after 3 hours 15 minutes of waiting. Every year we leave saying it must get better….but it doesn’t.
