25 years ago – 10,000 people visit Bell Block’s Airport in one day

Airborne Spectacular NZ 1990 Air Show took place at the Bell Block based New Plymouth Airport,and will be remembered as the 50th Anniversary formation of British Airborne Forces from United Kingdom and a celebration of New Zealand’s 150th Anniversary.On the day a crowd of over 10,000 were treated to aerial activities that included Warbirds aircraft Mustang and DC Dakota used as a parachute jump aeroplane. One of the mass parachute jumps was to capture a scene similar to the ‘D’ Day Landings during WWII. RNZAF Andover and Hercules aircraft, helicopter and civilian aero-clubs were participants. The military parachutists came from New Zealand, Australia, United Kingdom, USA, France, Poland. Also, taking part were civilian parachutist from throughout New Zealand Clubs. This event had all kinds of activities from brass bands, pipe bands, static activities to marching girls with many clubs and groups from local community taking part. The Air Show was opened by John Proffitt, Air Show Director and David Lean, Mayor of New Plymouth with a special blessing of the airfield from Te Aroa Taranaki.
